Coming soon to a theater near you…

September 1, 2015

ASIFA-Colorado is proud to announce that our most recent collaborative animation project, the Exquisite Corpse 2015, has been completed. This animated short will make its theatrical debut at the 2015 Denver Animation Festival, presented by our friends at the Emerging Filmmakers Project’s Denver Animated Pixelshow. The Festival is September 20th 6:30PM at the Bug Theater in Denver, 3654 Navajo Street. The Pixelshow folks have been strong supporters of Denver’s animation community and we are proud to have been asked to screen the Exquisite Corpse with them.

The Exquisite Corpse was a collaborative project created by members of ASIFA-Colorado. Each participant was given an identical drawing of “ASIFA Man” (created by Evert Brown) and instructed to create a short animation that begins and ends with this drawing. The result is an animated tapestry comprised of multiple media and styles. We invite all of our members to attend the Denver Animation Festival to see the Corpse and lots of other great local independent animation. Tickets can be purchased here. Support Colorado animation!

Stay tuned for information on more future screenings of the Exquisite Corpse.

Your Secretary,
Joey Buhrer

And the ASIFA-Colorado Best Animated Short Award goes to…

January 27, 2015

Admit it, you love awards season.

We here at ASIFA-Colorado love awards season too. That’s why we recently put on our fanciest ball gowns to hand out the annual ASIFA-Colorado Best Animated Short Award for 2014.

For those of you who don’t know, this is the largest animation prize in the state of Colorado. The winner is selected from all animated entries in all categories at the Starz Denver Film Festival. The jury is comprised of the Board of Directors of ASIFA-Colorado, as well as several renowned representatives from Colorado’s animation community, including professional and independent animators. You might think of it as our own little Annie Award.

The winner of the ASIFA-Colorado Best Animated Short Award for 2014 is…

SALMON DEADLY SINS by Steven Vander Meer!

Here is a statement from our President Ed Desroches:

“Salmon Deadly Sins is very surreal and quite clever.  The fast pacing and mesmerizing morphing kept us entertained and interested. From the use of the word, the tint of the images, to the name of the band keeping us on edge it was all salmon, salmon, salmon.  Imaginative and creative, this year’s ASIFA-Colorado Best Animated Short Award goes to Salmon Deadly Sins by Steven Vander Meer with music by Leftover Salmon.”

More information about this wonderful short can be found here:

Congratulations Mr. Vander Meer! We encourage all ASIFA-Colorado members to view Steven’s work and to support him and all independent animators. If you get a chance to see Salmon Deadly Sins in full, do not miss it.

We would especially like to thank our sponsors who helped make this year’s award possible – our great friends the Brand Chefs at Mighty Fudge Studios, and our other great friends at the awesome Hangar 18 Miniatures. These folks have long supported the animation community here in Colorado, so please support them.

9/5 6:30 PM – Exquisite Corpse Animation Kickoff

August 28, 2014

If you are interested in participating in our upcoming Exquisite Corpse animation project, please meet us Friday September 5th at the Kalamath Studio for our kickoff event.

We will be discussing possibilities and laying out details with the help of all participants. Please join us for a fun, laid back evening discussing this project.

“Exquisite Corpse” is the name of a collaborative drawing game created by the Surrealists. In our animated version, each participant will receive a frame of animation from the previous participant. You then create a short piece of animation based on that frame, with no other context of the story leading up to your own sequence. When finished, your final frame is passed along to the next participant. When all participants have finished, all of the animations are put together, forming a creative and surreal short film that will have you guessing where one animator’s sequence ends and another’s begins.

We’d love to have you participate. Please join us at our Kalamath studio Friday evening at 6:30 pm to help us kick it off and add your own voice to the direction of the project. Entry fee is $5 for ASIFA members, $10 for non-members. Animators of all media, styles and levels are invited to participate.

What: Exquisite Corpse animation kickoff

When: Friday, Sept 5th at 6:30 PM

Where: ASIFA-Colorado Headquarters:

Animation Station @ Erie Community Library

August 1, 2014

01Erie2014 040

We had such a great time animating at Erie Community Library in July with some awesome young Colorado animators! ASIFA-Colorado tries to serve all of the state’s animation lovers, and it was a beautiful day in Weld County.

02Erie2014 034

We were focused on all sorts of stop motion: cut outs, claymation, Legos, pixilation…if we could move it, we animated it. There was Iron Man, Blobby & Blobby Jr., a cheezie 1980s police chase, and, and, and…you’ll just have to watch the video below!

03Erie2014 036

We at ASIFA-Colorado would like to thank all of the participants who came out to join us. We’d also like to thank Erica Segraves and everyone at the Erie Community Library for being so awesome, and for giving the community in and around Erie an opportunity to learn about and experiment with animation. We had a great time and we look forward to doing it again. Here are the wonderful animated pieces that were created that day:

Keep an eye right here on for information on more upcoming events. Who knows where in Colorado we will pop up next to spread the good word about animation!?

The clock is ticking. Competitors have until Sunday to bring back their animated shorts. Come see the results at the Graduation Animation Screening and Soiree on Friday, May 16th!
