Animation Station @ Erie Community Library

August 1, 2014

01Erie2014 040

We had such a great time animating at Erie Community Library in July with some awesome young Colorado animators! ASIFA-Colorado tries to serve all of the state’s animation lovers, and it was a beautiful day in Weld County.

02Erie2014 034

We were focused on all sorts of stop motion: cut outs, claymation, Legos, pixilation…if we could move it, we animated it. There was Iron Man, Blobby & Blobby Jr., a cheezie 1980s police chase, and, and, and…you’ll just have to watch the video below!

03Erie2014 036

We at ASIFA-Colorado would like to thank all of the participants who came out to join us. We’d also like to thank Erica Segraves and everyone at the Erie Community Library for being so awesome, and for giving the community in and around Erie an opportunity to learn about and experiment with animation. We had a great time and we look forward to doing it again. Here are the wonderful animated pieces that were created that day:

Keep an eye right here on for information on more upcoming events. Who knows where in Colorado we will pop up next to spread the good word about animation!?

This delightfully old-fashioned, hand-drawn film explodes across the screen like a gorgeous watercolor painting brought to life. It tells the story of a forbidden friendship between Ernest, a down-on-his-luck bear, and Celestine, an open-minded mouse, whose tender and playful relationship provokes shock, anger and chaos within their respective worlds. With great storytelling, perfect comic timing and wonderful on-screen chemistry between the two leads, this is one of those rare films that audiences of all ages will remember forever with a smile.

Directed by Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar and Benjamin Renner

In The Wind Rises, Jiro dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the world’s most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events, including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic and Japan’s plunge into war. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko, and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo. Writer and director Hayao Miyazaki pays tribute to engineer Jiro Horikoshi and author Tatsuo Hori in this epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.

The Animation Station Workshops and Competition were presented by ASIFA-Colorado and Denver Film Society and sponsored by CU Denver Digital Animation Center, Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, AIMS Community College, and the mighty, Mighty Fudge Studios.

During the film festival, ASIFA-Colorado also presented its Best Animated Short Prize to Thomas Stellmach and Maja Oschmann of Germany for “Virtuos Virtuell”, a beautiful experimental animation timed perfectly to a composition.

We had a lot of fun working through these animations with all the attendees.

The theme of the Animation Station Competition this year was Killer Flying Robots Painting the Town Red. The participants included teams with 3 or fewer animators and the teams were given 6 hours after the theme was presented to come up with a completed animation.

The compiled workshops and competition film can be viewed here:
